For true offbeat and vintage New York charm, head to Night Court at Centre Street. Tourists have been frequently the legal system for years, presumably to get a glimpse of the less savory side of New York City.
Legally, a person in New York can be held up to only 48-hours before being arraigned before a judge, and this means New York City courts are in action day and night. You'll find the courts full of Legal aid lawyers, public defenders, and criminal lawyers with cases of drugs, robbery, and protest in tow. Night court hears the same cases as criminal court, just in the evening hours. It's not for the squeamish or faint at heart, as domestic violence, drug charges, and homicides are frequent.
Night court is free to watch, and is in session from 5:30pm to 1:00am.
