BudgetTravel.com is toting their new list on "Ultimate Guide to Free Travel". Like some of my past articles including How to Travel for Free, they make mention of house sitting, couch crashing, transporting cars, home swapping, and more as no-cost travel alternatives.
I was pleased to see new ideas I hadn't considered, including hiking trail volunteers. If you're an experienced hiker or are reasonably fit with time to spare, you can try contacting The Continental Trail Alliance, Pacific Northwest Trail Association, or Appalachian Trail Conservancy for volunteer trips to help lead hikes. While you don't get paid for your services, you can get free campsites and other perks like cabins and food.
You can start your own hiking or outdoors club on meetup.com or yelp.com and get a dozen people together for a trip. On top of expenses for the trip, collect an extra $5 each in voluntary administrative fees and organize an outing to the Catskills via Peter Pan bus lines. You'll get your ticket paid for and get some leadership experience to grow your new travel business.
If you're looking for something frugal and organized, try OutdoorBound.com. This New York based company started in 1982 as a day-hiking company and now leads over 170 different trips a year. Informational events, day trips, and getaways range from free to $395 or more. They're upcoming Backwoods Snowshoeing adventure runs $69 a person and leave at 8:00am on January 24th from the Apple Bank on 73rd Street and Broadway. The fee includes snowshoe rental, group lesson, trail fees, transportation in our passenger van, and hot cocoa.
Need something in between free and $69 a pop? Try their $25 indoor rock climbing excursion instead. On January 26th, they're hosting a 3-hour climb at the Manhattan Plaza on 43rd Street and 10th Avenue. Check out their website for registration and details on other budget-friendly outings.
