I was excited to see Union Square setting up for Christmas with their annual holiday stands. Even when it's crowded, I love walking through and seeing the ornaments and lights, smelling the hot apple cider and sweets.
That got me thinking about my favorite holiday events in the city, most of which are free. Here's 8 reasons to celebrate the holidays on the cheap.
Thanksgiving Day Parade - If you don't want to stand in the cold all day to see the parade on Thanksgiving, come to 77th street and Columbus the evening before. See the floats inflated and take a holiday stroll through Central Park.
Bryant Park - Now until January 25th, ice skating in Bryant Park is free if you bring your own skates, or rent some at the park for under $12. It's also fun to watch and listen to the variety of jazz and holiday music playing.
Lincoln Square - On December 1st, head to the Winter's Eve at Lincoln Square for live entertainment and street performances.
Rockefeller Center - Come see the lighting of the infamous tree on December 3rd.
Central Park Holiday Lighting - On December 9th, join the free festivities at Charles A. Dana Discovery Center for music and entertainment.
Macy's window - Come see the latest installation of holiday decor at Macy's.
Holiday train display - See the free model train exhibit at The Station at Citigroup Center complete with miniature towns and street scenes.
South Street Seaport - Come for weekend holiday performances around the Christmas Tree.
