Out & About Musikarmaggedon

Examiner.com:  Why do a battle of the bands?  What does it do for Out & About and Spark? For the music scene in New Castle County?  For musicians and their fans?

Mike Pollock, editor in chief, Out & About:  Musikarmageddon is a huge showcase for local talent.  It's a big deal to win, and the bars enjoy the fans that come out; ultimately, the bands are the real stars.  It's their time to shine.

Matt Sullivan, editor of Spark Weekly:  It's gratifying to see alumni from the Summer Music Series get their due – bands like Hoots & Hellmouth and Three Legged Fox, who are playing all over the place right now. But, I'll be honest, Spark is not a nonprofit music operation. We also do it because we make money, though with the amount of time and effort that goes into the Series ... well, let's say we do it for the love, at least in part.

Mike Pollock: I think these things are always a little tricky, because the idea of bands, creative people, "battling" over their art can turn people off, but, I liken it to any kind of arts contest: the idea of "best" is going to be very subjective, but you can't argue with the kind of exposure they're getting, especially those bands that move along to the later rounds.

Take some time and look at the schedule for Musikarmaggedon and the Spark Summer Series and work a show or two into your summer fun.  Don't forget to keep tabs on your favorites, to see if they stay in the running throughout the competition.
