First and foremost, I'm a sucker for any bakery that brews Batdorf and Bronson coffee. I love their Dancing Goats blend, so that was an immediate plus when I walked in to Matty Cakes off of Piedmont Rd. Across the street from Matt's Rib Shack and adjacent to the car wash with the big waving gorilla. I'm sure that some of you are going to know exactly what I mean.
I went in to buy my boss a cupcake for her birthday. Dianne, my boss, is in her 60's and is a southern born and raised woman. Her sparking blue eyes and southern accent made her the perfect candidate for a huge Red Velvet Cupcake. The even sold candles for $0.15. I figured, I'd just buy one, for the sake of the celebration.
I don't know a lot about Dianne. I only that a southern woman, with her maturity, should love a Red Velvet cupcake. I walked into the office, my hands extending toward her with the offering from Matty Cakes. She grinned and blushed like she was a little girl again.
"I love red velvet cake," she admitted as I put it on her desk and sang her Happy Birthday.
The next day, I called over for some information, and she interrupted me mid-sentence.
"Oh! Thank you," she exclaimed, "That was the best Red Velvet Cake I've had in a long long time."
Now, I never had piece of the cupcake, so don't expect a continuation of the cupcake battle. But, I will say, if a southern woman says it's good, well then, it is.
