Former Pacer, Chris Mullin, came to Indianapolis
over twelve years ago. Before then, he was playing
for the Golden State Warriors. I was privileged to
bump into him.
We were at the Keystone Mall when Monica said,
"Gee. That guy's tall."
I turned and dropped my jaw.
"Honey! That's Chris Mullin! That makes
sense. He used to play for Golden State before
recently coming here! Give me a pen!"
"I don't have one."
"What!?"
"I don't have one." she said calmly.
Moments from just walking away, I thought,
Hey, you may not get an autograph. But you may
at least be honored to shake the guy's hand.
By this time, he's standing at a yogurt stand with,
what appeared to be, his wife and young son.
"Scuse' me, you're Chris Mullin, aren't you?"
He replied with a warm smile and firm nod of his head.
He offered his hand and I shook it.
"I look forward to seeing you play this season."
"Thank you." came his reply.
That was the same year that the Pacers went all seven
games against the Chicago Bulls in the Eastern
playoffs (We went to game six).
"What're you driving at, Russell?"
I almost dismissed approaching Mr. Mullin because
I did not have a pen. In one brief moment, I realized
that I still had an opportunity. I seized it.
Hang with me as we delve into the last few words of Peter's
short speech.
Here's a high level break down of what
Peter's said so far:
Praise the right person. v.12
Pay attention to the prince. v.13-16
Please listen to the prophets. v.17-24
This is going to be wrapped up with...
...Pick up on your privilege. v.25-26
Peter tells them:
"You are descendents of a covenant." v.25
"Hey, people. You happen to be great, great, great,
great (I don't know how many 'greats) grandchildren of
the prophets who have written about all this stuff. That
being the case...
"You are deliberately the commencement." v.26
This is what blows me away...
After Peter has told them that, they are the enemies of Jesus,
he tells them that they are the very first nationality to whom
Jesus goes to offer kinship, friendship, and salvation from
the wrath to come.
In simple laymen's terms, "Yeh, you're the ones who hosed him.
But you were quite ignorant of the magnitude of your actions.
God wants to wash you of his blood from your hands. He now
wants to wash you with his blood and, better than water, remove
all of your offence. You get to be first in line, before the rest
of the world, to be cleaned of your sin!"
What's this mean to me, Russell? I'm not Jewish and I'm
in Indianapolis; not Jerusalem.
Hang tight, and we'll wrap this up next time.
