STOP!  If you haven’t read part 1 of the career assessment challenge, you need to do that first or this article just might not make any sense! (like SO many of my other articles before this one).  Career assessment part 1
You should probably do Wednesday’s article too…since you DO have an extended weekend ~
·         Remember: At the end of each question, I’ve accidentally inserted the CAREER topic (in red) that the question relates to so that you will be reminded that this is not a complete and total waste of your time.
Okay…get your list of 20 participants in your assessment out and we will begin our LAST series of questions in our assessment:
7. Via a radio receiver, your communication’s expert has created (WHAT? You forgot to bring someone to focus on writing, intra-island communications and radio-telegraphy? Oops, look at your list and make a “replacement”. No fair magically turning your great-grandma into a Communication’s expert either!), you discover that a nearby island, the Republic of Palau * no way affiliated with the REAL Republic of Palau * is inhabited! How should the communication system on new Guam flow? Hourly? Daily? Weekly? Should you use posted notices or meetings? Should this be from one person to all inhabitants or by “select groups”? [Communications]
8. Your communication’s expert discovers that the Republic of Palau has a lot of coal which your scientist could use to create a conventional power station. How you get the coal: Military force, trade, import for a limited resource export, Labor trade (you didn’t really want those Zoroastriasts on “New Guam” anyway, right?) How will this decision be made? [Conflict Resolution]
9. Most of the folks on New Guam have been able to participate in a self-regulated trade system. But, one of the builders was injured and is now unable to build ever again. One of your group is also very old and now ill. Who will take care of these folks…and how will their rations be paid for? [Teamwork, benfits, retirement]
10. Here is your CAREER ASSESSMENT:
  • Which question was easiest for you to answer?
  • Which question was most difficult for you to answer?
  • Did you take on the leadership role/decision maker for New Guam?
  • Did you have to “remove” someone from your original list to fill a position effectively? How tough was that decision process?
  • Have you figured out where you NATURALLY contribute best to your organization?
  • Did you discover some personal barriers to your own success? (i.e. eating the other inhabitants while still in the bunker)
  • Did you have a positive or negative attitude throughout this exercise?
  • Did you expect ME to provide YOU with your answers? Career assessments are personal, self-assessments.
Now: What will you do DIFFERENTLY to prevent your career from being hit by…”the bomb”?
·         The fact that you actually DID or did NOT do this career assessment is one of the strongest indicators that you have the ability to set and achieve worthwhile goals.
 
·         Learn from your experiences, and as you set new goals, factor in what you’ve learned. Don’t fall prey to overreaching your grasp that the predictable outcome is no progress at all. Which means:
 
·         Take this assessment again, from part 1, and see if your outcome and views have changed. If you didn’t complete this with a spouse or co-worker, try taking this with someone and expressing your views aloud. If you say, “Oh, I really value open communication in the workplace.” And you hear, “Sure, as long as it involves your Blackberry!” as a response, make a CHANGE.
