Career clothing with Michael Beau Williams
Today we have MICHAEL "BEAU" WILLIAMS, the 2009 Toastmaster's International District 56 Speaking Champion, business wardrobe consultant and author of the incredible “How to Win in the Game of Dress for Success!” and “Would You Hire Me?”
Michael, first let me start by saying "Congratulations" on your recent speaking success! That's an incredible accomplishment. I understand you will be competing in the multi-state Regional contest on the 20th, so we truly appreciate your time with us today!
Q: How did you become interested in the business of professional dressing?
A: I have been selling men's clothing for 20 plus years. My favorite customer is a person needing clothing for an interview. The interview outfit is such an important piece of the puzzle of person's future. First impressions are so vital to getting a job. If you don't look like you will fit in to a company's culture, your chances will be slim that you will get the job.
Q: Are dressing standards becoming more relaxed in today's workplace?
A: For the last 10 to 15 years, the dress codes at work have become more relaxed. And believe it or not, when the dress code becomes more relaxed, so does the work production. People work habits many times are a reflection of the way they dress. No, I have never done a scientific study, but I know that when I dress up on my job, I feel better about myself, I treat others better, and I feel better about what I am doing. Don't take my word, test yourself.
Q: If an applicant discovers that the company allows denim jeans on Fridays and the applicant has an interview scheduled on a Friday, is it okay to dress comparably?
A: If you are going on an interview on a Friday, and it is casual Friday at the company, don't fall in the trap of dressing casual. Pretend it is Monday and you need a job. Dress in a professional manner.
Q: What outfit "accessories" are appropriate? Houston is known for the home of the teeth "grills", bling-bling, and some high-dollar cowboy boots.
A: If you are interviewing for a Hip-hop job as a rapper, the bling might be okay. Otherwise, leave the bling for the night on the town.
Q: Tattoos and piercings: Since these are becoming more visible on celebs, are they becoming more accepted at work?
A: Tats and piercing have become popular fads. They have become modes of adornment which many believe makes them feel part of the in-crowd. Maybe so, but in an interview, tats and piercing should be covered with make-up or clothing. Some tats can be misunderstood, and mistaken for cult belonging or gang related. If you can help it, do not show your tats.
Q: If you had to select just ONE basic outfit for a male, what would it be?
A: Depending on the job you are seeking, the clothing you chose should be carefully picked.
But, let's assume you are applying for a job at a bank for a teller's position.
Male: white or light blue shirt (long sleeve), neat neck tie, solid navy suit, navy socks, black shoes with matching belt, watch, one ring only and no earrings.
Q: Same question as # 6, but for a female?
A: pastel blouse (high neckline), black skirted suit, skin-toned hose, black 1 inch pumps, matching handbag, 5 to 9 pieces of accessories (jewelry), only 1 earring in each ear size of nickel or smaller, no nose, lip, or tongue rings.
Q: Any hair grooming tips for men/women? I have a beard and I do NOT want to lose it!
A:Hair style should be neat and conservative. No facial hair is recommended.
Q: Where can I get more information about dressing for success?
