The state of the economy is leaving more of us with fewer dollars in our pockets, and with bills to pay it is getting harder to pay for hobbies such as collecting comics. I know that I follow numerous Marvel and DC series, along with some independents, but, with the average comic costing $2.99, the prices really begin to add up. That is why I think DC, Image, and all other comic companies need to set up digital comics like Marvel has. DC has taken steps towards distributing digital publications, but Marvel is definitely leading the pack.

Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited is set up on a subscription basis. You can pay about $60 for a year of access to thousands of Marvel comics. You can read as many as you want until the year has passed. The selection of comics is great and I have been able to catch up on many back issues of series I have been following, along with reading some classic comics such as early Fantastic Four issues. This program works best for people who read lots of comics and are looking for back issues, because Marvel doesn’t release digital copies of comics until 6 months after they are released in comic stores. Ideally, I’d like to see issues digitized earlier after their print release so it was easier to follow a series, but for now Marvel provides a cheaper way to read some good comics.

The digitized comics are displayed in a separate window with plenty of zoom controls and layout options to make the comics easy to read. It is an easy to use system and the artwork comes through clear. I especially like how you can zoom in on panels, but I will admit that sometimes one or two page splash pages can look a little awkward at times. I don’t think that this system is as good as picking up an actual comic and reading it, so I encourage everyone to continue visiting their local comic shop. There is nothing that can replace sitting down with an actual comic in hand, but Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited provides a cost effective way to enjoy comics even when money is tight.
