Google Profiles

At one point or another most people have used Google to try and locate a person. Perhaps you've even looked to see what Google says about you.

Well Google just plucked Google Profiles, one of their many products, from obscurity to center stage.  When you search for a name on Google the results will now feature a section dedicated to Google Profile results at the bottom of every page.  The results will show four thumbnail profiles and anyone who doesn’t appear in those four spots can be found by clicking a link to show more results. Don't ask how they decide who gets the top four spots as, just like the rest of Google's search formulas, that will be a closely held secret.

Google Profiles allow people to fill out their basic information, like current employer and links to various web sites without having to maintain a personal website.  To complete a Google Profiles you can go to www.google.com/profiles or just go to Google and search on "me" and the search results should provide you the same link.

Interest in Google Profiles should be changing overnight so if you have not already signed up now is the time.  The first person with your name will have the option for a vanity URL as in google.com/profiles/yourname.  Google is not competing with other social networking sites (LinkedIn, Facebook etc.) but this is subtle entry way into that space.  My guess is that by this time next year there will be many more features added into Google Profiles.
