In honor of Love Note Day, I wanna leave a note for a long gone love: The Sega Dreamcast.
We met in 1999. I wasn’t supposed see you until September of that year. I saw you in August in Venice Beach. I couldn’t wait. You had so much to offer-you were built on promise, never a tease.  Then, that day came: 9/9/99.  You were amazing, you had it all from day one: looks, brains, speed.
All the others were jaggy and flawed compared to you. They felt even sluggish. They were even sugary sweet, trying so hard to grab my attention. Not you, you showed off one bit of your soul in Soul Calibur and I was yours. You even brought along an old friend of mine and showed how new and improved it was and it was one of the last times that Sonic the Hedgehog had a great outing. If only I had a device to save all the memories we created at the time. It didn’t matter-I would’ve stayed up two weeks in a row to create all the memories we did.

And as time went along, you kept getting better and we start trying unique stuff: rollerblading in Jet Set Radio, flying down the hills in San Francisco in Crazy Taxi,  zombie-hunting in Resident Evil CODE: Veronica, had me moving around mices for hours in Chu-Chu Rocket, and you even let me experience a game that had pioneered the free-roaming genre in Shenmue.  Some of my best experiences were with this group of pirates, sailing the skies and looking for powerful stones in Skies of Arcadia.  I was always impressed with you and then you went online and had me connect with other people and search for rare items in Phantasy Star Online. Dreamcast…you were the best.

I loved you even when Playstation 2 was on the horizon and everyone went gaga over without even touching you. I even ignored how broken your home was-how your parents past mistakes finally caught up with you. But, your features were still amazing to me but you were stolen from me.

In the time since you untimely demise, I had to make due with a Soul Calibur sequel. It wasn’t as fun, not even with Link. Can you believe how hard they made Mitsurugi’s Twin Splinters move? And when they moved Jet Set Radio to another box, it was ignored. No one appreciated its vibrant look and funky music. And Sonic has never been the same since. They added more characters and bigger areas, but he’s always been buggy and glitchy.  They tried taking your best parts qualities and putting you in different places and it hasn’t worked.

You were too good for this world and too ahead of your time. Maybe there’s another place where you’re more appreciated and constantly talked. I miss you, Dreamcast.
