Gamasutra has posted an article which examines the best-selling games of 2008 and this time, this list looks at the top five sellers on each major video game consoles (the article doesn't include the DS, PC, or PSP).

Not surprisngly, Grand Theft Auto IV tops the list on both the 360 and PS3. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Madden NFL 09 are also the chart-toppers on both consoles. The other top sellers on the 360 were Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 and Army of Two. The other two chart toppers for the PS3 were two of their biggest exclusives: Metal Gear Solid 4 and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue.

The Wii's top sellers are full of Nintendo exclusives, naturally. Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Play, and Wii Fit. The fifth game on the list is one of the few third party titles that are actually available on all consoles: Guitar Hero III.

The article also talks about how much more software has moved on the Wii, compared to the PS3 and 360.

It's really surprising to see how many franchises and sequels make up this list. Only three titles across all three platform are actually brand new titles: Wii Fit, Army of Two, and Wii Play.

It looks like the only way to start a new franchise it to have made by Nintendo.
