This time of the year is known for two things: 1) big video game releases and 2) hurt wallets and accounts. And with the current economic crisis means this is no time to be throwing money around. Wired's Geekdad blog had five useful tips to save money and walk away with some great games:

1. Stay informed 2.Read Reviews 3.Embrace the Demo 4.Don't Be Afraid to Trade-In or Buy Used 5.Harness the Power of Gaming Communities.

As far as the first tip goes, that one should be pretty obvious. If you know that Gears of War 2 is coming out in early November, then you probably shouldn't buy any games in October. The second tip should be dirt simple to anybody buying games. If you're a Wii owner, look at the control scheme within the review because that's difference between keeping a game or trading it in.

The third tip is probably for those who are on the fence about a certain title. DS, PS3, and 360 owners have better luck than Wii owners. The fourth tip may be a necessary evil. But some stores offer great trade-in deals. And if you're buying Resistance 2, then you can go ahead and trade-in the first Resistance. Also, if you trade-in enough games, you can gather enough store credit where you're not paying for any new game.

The fifth tip is a really good tip because not only some sites, like Goozex and Cheap Ass Gamer, helps with you trade-ins but also store discounts and special promotions, like Amazon's Gold Box Deals.

Some tips that have been helpful for me:

If you need to get rid of old games, Amazon.com is better becase you can name the price for the game you're selling. While you can get 16 dollars of store-credit at Gamestop for Kirby Super Star Ultra, you get 20 dollars cash for the same game selling at Amazon.

Also, Black Friday is a perfect time to get great deals at big chain stores. With Circuit City falling on hard times, there's a great chance to score some great discounts.

These stores have been a great place for me to buy some good games:
