In time for today's holiday, here are some games that should put gamers in the right mindset for Halloween: namely dressing up and getting scared.
As a disclaimer, this isn't a list of the scariest games ever or what I consider the best horror games. Those list are all over the internet. These selections aren't based on anything scientific other than they're good and they fit certain theme.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night-PSX/PSN/XBLA 1997,2007-It's not a entirely scary game but it has an incredible gothic theme with so many monsters and enemies from the backlogs of all horror movies and stories: succubuses, medusas, skeletons, zombies, demons. Even Death makes a mahor appearance and it all takes place in a giant castle, which lead to one of the biggest video game secrets: a inverted castle that made the game longer without artificially padding the game. And let's not forget what main character Alucard has given to the cosplay community. An all-time classic.

Zombie Revenge-DC 1999-Not all horror games have to be gruesomely scary, they can be like B-movies, just like Resident Evil was before the franchise grew. This is one of the goofiest games on a system filled with quirky titles, this game takes zombie killing and adds really weird weapons, like a drill and a guitar, Zombie Revenge is all about making busting zombie heads fun.

System Shock 2-PC 1999-Quite possibly one of the best games ever made, System Shock 2 raised the bar for storytelling and narrative to places unseen until Bioshock, which shares the same designer, Ken Levine. While both setting and plot details are different, System Shock 2 contains a theme that shook gamers to their core: manipulation of the main player. Finding out how a dead person is giving the player hints on what to do isn't as frightening to who's actualyl behind it. It frightens on a level that transcends visceral trickery and outlandish gore.

Fatal Frame-PS2,XB 2002-Back when survival horror was THE rage, it took any kind of gimmick for a game to stand out in a crowded field. Enter Fatal Frame, which is a combination of the Ring meets Pokemon Snap, with it's camera-based approach to combating ghosts. It's one of the more disturbing survival horror games due to the fact it's allegedly based on Japanese urban legends.

Resident Evil CODE: Veronica-DC, PS2, GC 2000, 2001, 2002-Im not choosing Resident Evil 4 despite it being the best Resident Evil in series and one of the best games ever. CODE: Veronica gets my nod due to the fact because it had all the flawed mechanics of the series and it was still a stellar experience. And it managed to still be scary, especially in one of the final acts with Claire, a giant concrete block and one of the most terrifying puzzles in Resident Evil history.
