We've all heard the saying that we are what we eat. According to a new report, we might also feel what we eat. It seems a diet heavy in processed and fatty foods increases the risk of depression, according to a report published recently in the British Journal of Psychiatry.
Researchers at University College London recently set out to investigate whether a diet heavy in processed and fatty foods increases the risk of depression. They also wanted data on whether a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruit and fish could help prevent the onset of depression.
The researchers compared groups of civil servants who ate a diet rich in "whole" foods with a second group who mainly ate fried foods, processed meat, high-fat dairy products and sweetened desserts.
After accounting for other lifestyle factors, such as not smoking or engaging in physical exercise, people eating a whole-food rich diet enjoyed a 26 percent lower risk of depression than those who ate mainly processed foods. People with a diet heavy in processed food faced a 58 percent higher chance of developing of developing depression.
