Jan iu Mes- 080 Barcelona Fashion

  • On September 3rd, 2009, the Spanish men's wear label Jan iú Més (founded 2005) by the designers Jan Zamora and Alfonso Peña presented their spring/summer 2010 collection during the 080 Barcelona Fashion.

Jan iu Mes showed a collection characterized by the image of a "...modern man who is extroverted, calm, true to himself, deliberate and intriguing...". The clothes for s/s 2010 use an interesting technique. They cut out  threads of clothing after a piece is sewn together, and then style it back into the fabric, creating a unique aesthetic to men's clothing.

Jan iu Mes use this styling technique, creating transparency with both their shorts and pants. This technique gives the clothes a delicate, soft and feminine look, that still looks masculine. Very innovative.

  • Jan iu Mes showed a lot of shorts in their collection, but even their trousers in partly transparent materials are presenting men’s legs in a new sexualized context. Shorts on men, is a very big trend right now. More and more you see men in shorts, with a vest and or a tie. This wasn't seen before. Never before have you seen a fashion trend with such a strong focus on men’s legs. Sexualizing or objectifying men, in a good way. It's tasteful, and sophisticated, and chic.

"The Wollberg Family" is a French film, recently shown during the French Cinema Now, series in San Francisco. They showed current French films, that haven't received distribution in America. In "The Wolberg Family" there is a scene between the mother and her 8 yr old son. The mother is telling her son about how she and his father first met. The mother describes how he was dressed, and the son, then comments, "oh my father he was so chic even then". This line was striking because it really brought into focus the incredible distance their still is between America and France regarding fashion and culture. You would never hear a line like this in an American movie. An 8 yr old boy saying how chic his father is? That is a huge cultural divide.
