Thomas Ven Der Jeught is a 24 yr old designer from Brussels, Belgium. He is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He is a recent graduate of 2007.
Thomas Ven Der Jeught has been designing layered and industrial pieces, inspired by visual artists, and he has continued to evolve his style to adapt to the changes in his personal feelings and his environment. Mostly in monochrome or pale muted colors, his clothes show a bleakness or seriousness through the use  of materials such as wool, mesh, denim and paint.

Thomas Ven Der Jeught has a degree in visual arts, fashion, and costume from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He collaborates with other visual artists, to create his clothes. This gives him a unique perspective. His clothes are multi-media in this sense. Art and Fashion are fused, to create unique visually arresting designs/constructions.

Thomas Ven Der Jeught describes himself as a loner, and that he wasn't  aware of the Fashion world until he was 17 or 18. This is a very honest statement from a very introspective artist turned fashion designer. Fashion designers are usually more extroverted by nature, the desire to create Art, as opposed to fashion is a hard transition. People like Pierre Cardin, who have both fashion and a real artistic perspective are rare.

See my article on Pierre Cardin, he made clothes out of hammered metal, and other carpenters pieces. Talents like Balenciaga, even John Galliano, are expressing their creativity through a one-dimensional plastic medium- clothes. Even thought they create clothes that simulate three dimensionality, they are still made only of  fabrics/textiles. Are these constructions, of found material and fabrics the future of Fashion?

The Recession pushes people to think differently, according to Thomas Ven Der Jeught. You have to find new ways to survive, this can create a new platform for new ways of designing. These constructions are definitely a lot cheaper than cashmere, fine woolen etc. What will people be wearing if and when there is no money. Barter. It is definitely a bleak aspect, and his clothes are functioning on that level. Depression clothes, for Artists. Who does he plan to market these clothes to? What buyers will purchase these clothes? Interesting. Who cares.

See my article on Antony Price, for a similar perspective. He is a super talented designer/artist, but has no ambition

He doesnt seem to concerned about this. He isn't doing this to make money. This is fearless. You have to respect him on that level alone. Sheer European intellectualism.
