André Courrèges is a French fashion designer whose designs were especially popular and influential during the 1960s. Andre Courreges worked for Cristóbal Balenciaga from 1950 to 1961. Using white, Courréges created the space-age, and unisex style that revolutionized fashion in the 60's.

See my article Balanciaga's Space-Age spring 2010 collection.

Andre Courreges introduced dresses and trouser suits that featured straight, flat lines and sheer tops that sometimes sported cut-outs. He made tunic tops and matching trousers de rigeur for women. He is often credited with the invention of the miniskirt, which he frequently paired with shiny white boots. Along with Pierre Cardin (see youtube video below), and Paco Rabanne, this was the trifecta of futurist fashion of the 60's.

Andre Courreges became famous for his futuristic fashion designs which started with the 1964 launching of his revolutionary 'Space Age' /Couture Future collection. Check out his Harlequin boots from the 1965 Courture Future collection. Stunning. This was also called Futurism. These were the futuristic clothes of tomorrow, for the fun new youth movement. It was called Youthquake. The clothes  were unconventional. This line was seen as a departure not only from traditional clothing designs but also in its use of fabrics. Couture Future was a brilliant artistic achievement, a bold statement about fashion and a philosophy to back it up. The collection featured modern designs in silver and white PVC. Austere and angular shapes trimmed with black, white and bright colors were characteristic of Courreges' designs.

Andre Courreges implemented a tiered system of fashion with 'Prototypes' the label for the haute couture and 'Couture Future' the deluxe ready-to-wear.

Audrey Hepburn wore the most incredible furturist fashions in the movie "Two For The Road"-1967. These clothes blow away what she wore in Breakfast at Tiffany's. She wore the most cutting edge fashions in this movie. She plays a housewife in the movie, and struts around in some scenes in Mary Quant, Paco Rabanne, Hardy Amies, Foale and Tuffin. Check out the photo slideshow its a pic in her from the movie in a black PVC (vinyl) pantsuit. Black plastic pantsuit. Rent the movie. Futuristic looking. Its a bad pic, but check out the movie, it is criminal these clothes weren't promoted more.

Andy Warhol said it best (Courreges Courture Future ready-to-wear was tres fab.).."The clothes of Courreges are so nice. Everybody has to look like this, dressed in silver. The silver grades in everything. I think that during the day the suits have to be wearing with more make-up"..
