A recent press release from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society announced that President Jane G. Pepper will retire in spring of 2010. In honor of her nearly thirty years of service, PHS has started the Legacy Landscapes campaign. Its goal is to raise $12.1 million in endowment funds dedicated to the maintenance of neighborhood and civic landscapes. The organization is invested in reaching the goal by next spring in conjunction with the retirement of President Pepper. The money will offset budget cuts and market fluctuations and provide PHS the means to maintain green spaces in Philadelphia’s revitalized communities and downtown sites.
“The Legacy Landscapes campaign offers an unprecedented opportunity to preserve the wonderful projects we have accomplished over the past thirty years well into the future,” explained Pepper.
And since money from the endowment fund will be used for the upkeep of the city’s public green spaces, PHS can now earmark funds for the revival of Philadelphia’s waterfronts, the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and other environmental projects.
The Campaign will wind up with the PHS Preview Reception and Dinner to be held at the 2010 Philadelphia International Flower Show on Saturday, Feb. 27. “Passport to the World” is the theme for the 2010 show. It will celebrate plants and flowers from all over the globe. The show goes from Feb. 28 to March 7 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
