Boston resident Rebecca Bird Grigsby’s Etsy shop, rgbcolor, features whimsical wedding invitations with bold colors, pretty designs, and elegant lettering.

When Rebecca was searching for invitations for her own 2005 wedding, she couldn’t find anything that fit both her taste and her budget. She decided to “go the DIY route” and created a “clean, simple, completely handmade ensemble that included a daisy motif against a white, turquoise, and red palette.” It was soon after her wedding that Rebecca and her husband moved to Boston, and just over a year ago, rgbcolor opened on Etsy.

Rebecca was kind enough to send me samples of her work. My favorite is the Winter Star Motif Wedding Invitation Ensemble. The paper is good quality and the printing is clean and smooth. The punched-out shapes and layers of paper add depth and interest to the designs as well. These invitations are as classy as any you’ll find in a stationery shop, but as unique as any invitation you designed yourself.

When describing her work, Rebecca told me, “My signature line, which is what you see in my Etsy shop so far, uses paper punches (popular in scrapbooking) and two or sometimes three layers of paper to create a contemporary and elegant invitation ensemble that is truly unique and handmade. I usually limit my palette to two or three colors, depending on the client's event details, and tie the color combination together with an envelope liner or decorative belly band. I strive to do this within a modest budget by using high-quality yet simple materials, passing that savings along to the client.”

I also asked Rebecca if she had any advice for couples getting started with the wedding planning process, since she went through it herself and now serves as a wedding vendor. She said,

Have fun and remember that no one vendor (invitations included) provides the most important detail (something I was told at nearly ever step of the planning process leading up to my wedding four years ago). The focal point should remain on the engaged couple and anything they can do to keep this in mind throughout the process should be encouraged! Otherwise, have fun with the planning and allow the process to be organic, letting seemingly unrelated details influence the way this once-in-a-lifetime event unfolds.

In addition to wedding invitations, rgbcolor also features handmade announcements and stationery for babies, birthdays, and more. Invitation ensembles begin at $3 per set, and can be customized with different paper and ink colors, fonts, and motifs. Rebecca will also consult with potential clients at no charge.
