It's Teacher Appreciation Week, with Tuesday, May 5 being Teacher Appreciation Day. According to the National Education Association, National Teacher Day was recognized by Congress in 1953 and in 1980, and in 1985 the National PTA established Teacher Appreciation Week as the first full week in May.

This year, a bill will be introduced in Congress that would formally declare the first Tuesday in May as a day to recognize teachers. The bill will also ask the President to issue a yearly proclamation encouraging the observation of the day.

For me, the teacher who had the most influence on me was my instrumental music teacher, Mario DeCarolis. You can read about some of my high school band experiences at Singing and Swinging, Seventies Style.
