The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway is a relaxing way to enjoy shopping for crafts and antiques in quaint north Georgia towns. What you don’t find in Blue Ridge, you will likely discover in McCaysville, Georgia or Copperhill, Tennessee where passengers debark for lunch and some light shopping. Perhaps you will find the perfect hand-crafted novelty gift for a friend or relative left far behind in the smog and grime of some huge metropolis. You can be certain that the leisurely train ride through the scenic mountains overlooking the beautiful Toccoa River will be a stress free adventure guaranteed to connect you to the soothing spirit of nature.
This sightseeing trip through Southern paradise begins at the historic 100-year-old depot in Blue Ridge GA where you are welcomed aboard one of the vintage open-air cars or an air-conditioned coach by an authentic conductor to sit in the seat of your choice.
My group, including wife, Leigh; son and daughter-in-law; Bill and Tracee, and our two grandsons, Mason and Collin visiting from the Tampa Bay area, rode in coach #2705 with its deco motif, roomy seats and wide windows. The big diesel engine plowed lazily but methodically through the mountains contrasting the Toccoa’s narrow, boulder-lined white-waters with its occasional wide, lake-sized openings and flat banks. In many places, the mountains are but a few feet from the windows.
After eating lunch at the Iron Horse Café in Copperhill Tennessee, which interestingly, one can visit from McCaysville by literally stepping over a painted GA/TN state line that separates the two towns, we shopped and browsed for more than an hour. My grandsons enjoyed the shops with miniature trains that chugged along tiny train-tracks with realistic buildings scenes. One of the guys let the boys run the little train, that I’m sure cost thousands of dollars. The boys enjoyed that a lot!
Bill and I checked out staggered lines of Harleys making their way through town and talked to a few shop keepers and watched the boys while Leigh and Tracee browsed the arts and crafts before we returned to the train and departing for Blue Ridge.
During autumn, the leaves and foliage turn a bright orange and red as fallen leaves and red clay replace much of the green weeds and underbrush at ground level. Each season in north Georgia has its unique charms, but perhaps none are as breath-taking as autumn. The everyday scenery here is postcard perfect; but as the colors become more dazzling, area festivals abound, and one will take home many desirable memories of north Georgia.
The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway excursion is a family event. Bring the children and grandchildren as it is an easy way to spend quality time with them without the stress of driving while on vacation. Ticket prices vary with seasons, but October is the premium season and ticket prices range from $39 for adults to $20 for children, and there is a senior discount. Tickets may be subject to an additional fuel charge.
