What is a freelancer?
Wikipedia definition: A freelancer, freelance worker, or freelance is a self-employed person who pursues a profession without a long-term commitment to any particular employer.
Job market definition: According to the Freelancers Union, freelancing includes "the segment of the labor force working outside of standard employment arrangements as independent contractors, temporary workers, contract workers, leased workers, part-time workers, on-call workers, day laborers, and the self-employed."
LJ’s definition: Well, golly. That all covers a lot. Here’s what I think: a freelancer is anyone whose main source of income is independent – freelancer, contractor, temp, nomad. You are not a permanent employee nor is your goal to be one, although it’s sure nice if you get the chance! You might work through agencies or on your own. You might have your own company or collaborate with other freelancers. You main office might be at home, the local coffee shop, or a shared collaborative space. You might be entirely mobile/computer-oriented, or bring your staples with you in the trunk of our car.
Why is this important? Well, because I want to make sure that these articles appeal and are targeted right. So, are YOU a freelancer, and are these articles going to be useful for you?
If you are one of the many folks between jobs who is realizing that project-based, contract/freelance work is likely to be in your future, then yes. To both questions. Freelancers have the difficulty of not really fitting in anywhere, wondering where the next paycheck is going to come from, having issues with getting/affording the benefits and perks FTEs expect, and wondering when the ax is going to fall on a project of indeterminate length.
Guess what? Freelancers also get to keep their own hours, often choose their own clients, and generally have more freedom to experiment and move on than the standard employee.
