Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones recently told the media that he received an offer from a team that was significant. He said the player is not one of his three running backs. He did say the player was young and the trade offer included a player and picks, and that it would have been a big trade.

When asked, Jones ruled out that the offer was for who is now the Cowboys third running back, Tashard Choice. Jones then elaborated by saying the offer was not for anyone at that position. He said it was a "premium" pick and that he had the possibility of getting a player who could contribute immediately.

Since then, there have been numerous rumors.

Here are the two top rumors:

  • The Bengals offered their first-round pick this year for tight end Martellus Bennett. A majority of fans have discounted this rumor because it just does not seem intelligent to trade your first round pick for a guy who was selected in the second round and is currently the organization's No. 2 tight end. Bennett doesn't start, and although he does partake in quite a few double TE sets, he hasn't made incredible plays catching the ball. He does help other receivers by posing the threat because he truly does have talent to be one of the best tight ends ever. Bennett is the most-mentioned player in most of the trade rumors.
  • The Jets offered apparently inquired about nose tackle Jay Ratliff, who has become a beast on the line. Ratliff is undersized, but strong and quick for the position. It's unclear who the player could have been on the Jets who would make an immediate impact. I think a first round pick from the Jets is not enough for Ratliff, who is likely going to make his second Pro Bowl.

There is an argument right now about letting a second first-round pick pass by for Bennett or Ratliff. Bennett was selected in the second round and Ratlif was selected in the seventh round of the draft five years ago.

I looked at one of the internets' best sites for NFL mock drafts, WalterFootball.com and used a pick randomly selected in the 20s, believing that both the Jets and Bengals will likely fall in that level of the 2010 draft. Players currently projected to go in that level of the first round are:

  • Arthur Jones, a defensive end and tackle for Syracuse University
  • Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida
  • Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma
  • Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma
  • Jahvid Best, RB, California
  • Greg Hardy, DE, Ole Miss
  • Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State
  • C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson
  • Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida
  • Morgan Burnett, FS, Georgia Tech

I don't know about you, but I don't think any of those players would be worth losing Bennett or Ratliff.
