Jerry Jones says Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips is safe all this season.
Phillips has been under fire in Dallas most of his career. Other than a 13-3 season and a first-round boot from the playoffs, he has coached a Dallas squad that many believe is underperforming.
The Cowboys are 3-2 headed into their bye week. They've defeated the Carolina Panthers, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Bucs. They've lost to the undefeated Denver Broncos and New York Giants--both very close games. The Cowboys could easily be 5-0, but none of the wins were exactly pretty and the two losses were certainly ugly.
As ESPN has pointed out, Jones has never made a mid-season coaching move, but Phillips is in his final year of a three-year contract.
Jones makes a good case for keeping hope, using the New York Giants as an example
"Two years ago the Giants were seemingly not in disarray, but they were in trouble," Jones said. "It was also absolutely expected that something was going to happen with the coach, [Tom] Coughlin. ... Well, that same year they won the Super Bowl. You've got to be mindful that this is a long, long journey. ... A lot can happen from the beginning to the end."
