The Dallas Cowboys had a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter and the team was brewing with confidence against the Pittsburgh Steelers today.
But late in the fourth quarter, the Steelers tied the game with two minutes left, handing over the ball to the Cowboys and their $60 million quarterback, Tony Romo.
Romo dropped back and threw a 15-yard pass to Jason Witten that was intercepted and returned for a touchdown. Witten seemed to take the blame for the interception, indicating he ran the wrong route. The game was over.
The Cowboys defense matched the Steelers top-ranked defense play for play. The Cowboys sacked Ben Roethlisberger five times and held the Steelers from scoring on a fourth and 1 in the fourth quarter. It was at that point that the Cowboys seemed to get too confident.
The Steelers ended up getting the ball back with about four minutes or so and tore through the Cowboys secondary, which appeared confused against a no-huddle offense.
The Cowboys had five turnovers and could not fully capitalize on the field position and mistakes that the Steelers made. The Cowboys defense gave the team every opportunity to win until they very end, when the secondary fell apart.
Tony Romo had a rough game, throwing three interceptions. The surprise of the game, besides the incredible play from the defense, was rookie Tashard Choice. Choice replaced injured Marion Barber, and ran for the most yards of any running back that has faced the Steelers so far this year. He has 23 rushes for 86 yards and five catches for 78 yards, including a 50-yard dash.
The Cowboys are pitiful in December, and are now 10-17 since 2003. But they are not out of the playoffs.
Thanks to the New Orleans Saints defeating the Atlanta Falcons, the Cowboys remain in the playoff hunt. They must hope for the Redskins to lose against the Baltimore Ravens to remain strong for that final wildcard spot. But the Philadelphia Eagles are right on their heels. The Eagles defeated the New York Giants rather easily this afternoon.
The Cowboys next face the New York Giants, a must-win game at home. It does not get any easier, when the Cowboys travel to Baltimore to play the Ravens and end the season in Philadelphia to play the Eagles--a game that could be for the final wildcard spot.
