Coming into the fight, many thought that the extra 20 pounds -- which were clearly not a result of weight lifting -- would greatly hinder him. But if it did, the results didn't quite manifest.
After taking a beating through the first round of the fight, Arreola came out and dismantled a very strong, highly athletic foe in Floridian Travis "Freight-Train" Walker with a plethora of powershots and a left-hook for the ages.
In an era of the sport where the heavyweight division is far from entertaining and all of the highly notables are from distant lands overseas, it's a breath of fresh air to see a contender emerge from U.S. soil....well, sort of.
Raised in East Los Angeles, Chris Arreola of Mexican heritage, and his fight style is clearly reminiscent of many of the sports Mexican greats.
In recent times, Mexican welterweight Antonio Margarito displayed what many fight fans know to be a Mexican ring blueprint, as he used a granite chin to allow him to walk through the power punches of Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto until he was able to eventually land enough of his own to pull the curtains on the show.
Arreola used that same style, and that bodes well for the rising heavyweight star because many of the current heavyweight champs don't seem to come equipped with a stamina that would allow them to grind it out in a hardcore fight of that nature.
It's still quite early in the career of Arreola so there's no true indication how far he can go. But if his most recent victory was any indication, I say the sky's the limit.
What do you think?
