Depending on which culture you ascribe to, today’s date 09/09/09 may be very lucky or is may be full of bad luck. The magic of numbers, referred to as numerology, is not based on scientific fact. Pythagoras, a Greek mathematician, was born in 569 BC in Samos, Ionia and is often given credit for making numerology a popular subject.
Even though little is known about his work, Pythagoras took his study concerning numbers very seriously. By using numbers for mathematic calculations and for referencing the “Divine”, documentation shows that he noted various unique attributes for the number 9. Pythagoras directed a secret society, part religious and part scientific, that abided by a code of secrecy adding even more mystery surrounding his life and works.
In Chinese culture, the number 9 is thought to represent long life. In ancient times, Chinese emperors wore royal dress, often containing an image of nine terrifying dragons. Being convinced of the awe-inspiring power of the number 9, rumors abound that the palace complex at Beijing's Forbidden City contains 9,999 rooms.
In contrast, the Japanese culture relates the number 9 to affliction. Many people of the Japanese culture go to great lengths to avoid room numbers in public buildings that contain the number 9. In fact, many architects eliminate the number all together to avoid this stigma.
