This post is dedicated to the memory of Michelle B. and all those lost on September 11, 2001. May you have repose in Heaven.
Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world. - James 1:27
It was America's late and lone Catholic president John Kennedy who boldly moved our hearts when he implored us, "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country." Those words were not in vain, but in fact they were a call to the service of our brethren. Today, on the anniversary of the worst terrorist attack on American soil to date (including the horrific attacks on the World Trade Center), we are called yet again to be a help to those without, to give greatly or minutely whether that gift be a simple smile, the washing of someone's dishes in the neighborhood or something as monumental as building a hospital in Haiti. We have a vocation by which we are called to love our neighbors as ourselves and today we declare it as an official national day of service. Join me in doing what you can for the greater good today and everyday. May perpetual light shine upon us as we do so!
