It's fairly easy to look stylish and impeccably crafted when the sun is out and the pavement is hot. When the snow starts falling and the streets turn to ice, however, it's a little harder to keep your winter wardrobe as fashionable. Luckily, there's a few classic tricks that will make it easier to skate by.

Your first priority is a pair of well-made, classic boots. Ideally, these are boots that you can wear with either skirts and hose or under jeans and slacks. Avoid UGG boots and all of their impostors. They might be warm, but they're fashion flops, and they'll only make you look like you belong back on campus. Look instead for fitted boots with a classic round or pointed toe (no square toes; this will date your look), preferably in leather or suede, materials that will stand the test of time.

Once you've found your boots, your next step is a warm coat with a good silhouette. This means that "bubble" coats are definitely out - they're great for skiing or cold mountain trips, but from day to day you'll want something a little less bulky. Wool in a sweater might be itchy, but for a coat it's perfect. Peacoats are always fashionable, especially for shorter women, and give you a retro look. If you're slightly taller, look into the longer-cut peacoats or classic trenches with belted or fitted waists.

With your outerwear taken care of, it's time to think about your actual attire. Remember grade school and all the fun, bulky printed sweaters your teachers may have worn? If you have anything like those sweaters, even ironically, do yourself a favor, box them up, and ship them out. Oversized sweaters and sweatshirts do nothing but hide any distinguishing features you may have. Instead, think about layering. A classic white long-sleeved blouse over a basic shell in any color keeps you warm while it highlights your figure. Not enough for you? Try a slimming tunic cardigan or sweater dress over the shell, or a woven vest over the blouse. There are so many ways to layer and very few ways to do it wrong.

Don't be afraid to experiment with color or prints, and keep your basics on hand. Nothing beats a warm pair of socks inside those boots, after all, and a matching set of gloves and scarf can keep you looking finished and flawless. Finally, if all else fails at warming your toes, keep a hot mug of cocoa or coffee with you at all times. After all, t'is the season!
