Straw floppy hat from Banana Republic, $59

I was at a brunch this weekend, enjoying strange combinations like pancakes and sushi that only a brunch can offer, when I saw a woman walk into the restaurant wearing an extremely large hat usually reserved for the Kentucky Derby or an audience with Queen Elizabeth. “Eccentric woman,” I thought, and returned my attention to my food. A few minutes later, another woman walked in with an equally wide-brimmed hat. A third woman soon joined the first two; in the span of mere minutes, there were roughly ten be-hatted women sitting around a table. Were hats back in fashion? Apparently they were.

In honor of and inspired by the brunch-time hat club, the following are useful guidelines from Shushan’s Hat Retailer for any petite woman who loves hats, will take any opportunity to wear hats, or desperately desires to join her own hat club:

- Petite women should wear small brimmed, small crowned hats.
- If you want to look taller, go for a little higher crown with a slope crease.
- Full figured women should avoid high crowns and go with curled brims and dramatic creases.
- If you have a long face, put a big curl in your brim and keep away from narrow brims.
- If you have a round face, go with a higher crown, but stay away from round brims.
- If you have a triangular face, go with a small brim with a big roll and a high crown.
- If you have a square face, try a peaked crown and a curled brim, and wear your hat at an angle.
- If you have an oval face, you've got the perfect face for any hat you want to wear.
- Whatever way you go, never wear your hat on the back of your head. Tilt it, pull it down, or wear it straight.

Having dispensed these essential tips, I feel confident that my readers’ impeccable sense of crainiary
fashion will inspire the envy of every bruncher in DC.
