With the financial mess going on, it's no wonder people are stressed. Those of us that are worried about job security, mortgage rates, and retirement plans might feel like there isn't a whole lot of room for having fun. But new research shows that making time for play—especially with your spouse—is crucial not only for the relationship, but for your physical and emotional well-being.
Researchers from the University of Denver say that finding time to spend together away from finances and other stresses is necessary for a healthy relationship. There are also many physical and emotional recuperative benefits of engaging in play with your significant other, including lower blood pressure, reduction of stress hormones, and an increase in the immune cells that combat disease.
Need some inspiration on where to find the fun? Dr. Kathleen Hall, founder and CEO of The Stress Institute, offers up some suggestions:
Find local attractions, such as the zoo, aquarium, farmer's market, or botanical garden. Let the colors, smeels, and sounds excite the senses.
Check out museum exhibits, which are constantly changing and spark conversation.
Find a great hotel in the mountains, the beach or a place you love that is within 2-3 hours away. Go there periodically and stay in your favorite room.
Explore your city and discover the wonderful sites and tourist destinations in your area. Many of us live in wonderfully interesting areas but we overlook them because we live there.
Play some online games: Start a competition and keep the fun going throughout the week.
