Fred Mascherino, former frontman for Breaking Pangaea and guitarist for Taking Back Sunday, now heads up The Color Fred, who released a limited edition acoustic EP, The Intervention in April.
The Color Fred is taking to Baltimore, performing live at Sonar on Saturday, August 22nd, with The Scene Aesthetic. We recently caught up with Mascherino to gain a little insight into the artist, his band and his recordings.
Jeff Schad: You had The Color Fred going for some time before transitioning to full time with it. What made you change when you did?
Fred Mascherino: Admittedly, I didn't really have a plan. I was recording the 'Bend to Break' album as a side-project when I realized I was leaving my old band. The side-project instantly became full-time and I had to catch up from there. I'm finally feeling comfortable now going into my second album, which I'm working on now.
JS: Was making it with your own project always important to you, or was that something that developed as The Color Fred developed?
FM: I don't know about "making it". I just hope to be playing music as long as I live. I'm not really good at anything else. Well, actually, I can hold my breath for a long time. Is that a talent?
JS: Tell us a little something we might not know about your EP, The Intervention…
FM: It was recorded in 4 nights, sometimes starting at 2am. That was when we could get into the studio. We did it pretty much live so it's close to what you see at my acoustic shows.
JS: Tell us a little something we might not know about Fred Mascherino.
FM: My beard is fake, I belong to a secret army and my favorite color is green. One of these is not true.
