In addition to publishing his autobiographical novel Hawaii Punk and hosting the D.I.Y. blog Disfunktopia, DIY stalwart Raoul Vehill has edited his uncle, Denver career criminal John “Bubbles” Gallegos’s autobiography Vato Maldito: My Life of Crime, currently being published serially at the new webzine MightyMercury.
Vehill describes his uncle’s book as a “crime gem” tailor-made for readers interested in Denver’s underground history. The narrative takes note of the thieves’ code of honor which features far less less hypocrisy than the one adhered to by most normal citizens, bears a resemblance to Jack Black’s You Can’t Win, which served as the primary ethical inspiration for proto-Beat author William S. Burroughs.
