This summer saw an increase in college aged females with a binge drinking, and co-occurring eating disorder problem called "Drunkorexia" according to the Eating Disorder Center of Denver. Drunkorexia is not a medical term, but "the name given to a pattern of disordered eating behaviors that combines bulimia nervosa (binge eating and purging) with binge drinking," says the Eating Disorder Blog.
The Eating Disorder Center in Denver reported that 75% of the college aged women enrolled in the program "met the criteria for alcohol abuse," according to PR-USA.NET. The center in Denver has tailored a program to deal with these co-occurring disorders, and has been accepting patients from across the country.
Alcohol abuse is more frequent with late-stage anorexic patients as it serves as a coping mechanism according to Craig Johnson, director of the eating disorders program at the Laureate Psychiatric Clinic and Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. With these 2 disorders occurring together, the women appear to be binge eating, binge drinking, then purging.
It isn't as if these women didn't have enough problems already with their eating disorder. However, this is not a problem that just started. It has been going on for some time, but appears to be on the rise.
