A Facebook group has sprung up in recent days with the sole purpose of getting Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 to be among the next recipients of a Kennedy Center Honor.
Tiffany Davis, a marketing manager in New York, began sewing the seeds on Friday – one day after Jackson's death – with a group petition on Facebook stressing the need for quick action and celebrity involvement to make the Honor happen.
“Like most people, my initial shock and sadness has turned into fond memories of growing up listening to some really great music from the Jacksons," Davis said in a statement. "Their music catalog alone provides a song for every mood and any experience. What better way to pay tribute to one of the country’s most inspiring and talented family of musicians than with a Kennedy Center Honor.”
The deadline for nomination letters is July 13 – less than two weeks away. Davis says she is hoping that the Facebook page - over 300 friends strong - can attract such influential celebrities as Quincy Jones, Queen Latifah and Steven Spielberg to help support the cause.
“There’s very little time for the nomination letters to be received by the committee, so we’re literally reaching out to anyone that will hear us,” she adds.
Davis provides the following instructions for those interested in joining the movement:
The 32nd Annual Kennedy Awards will be held in December. Submissions should reference The Jackson 5 as the Kennedy Center Honors are not awarded posthumously. All nomination letters (one page only) should be mailed to the following address:
Michael Kaiser, President
The Kennedy Center Honors
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts
2700 F Street, NW
Washington, DC 20566
On Facebook join the group: "Petition for Michael Jackson & Jackson 5 to become Kennedy Center Honorees."
