It really is something special to live in a country where government leaders, businesspeople, ministers and the community can unabashedly come together for fellowship and prayer.

Granted, you won't find events such as this Thursday's 40th Annual Meridian Mayor's Prayer Breakfast in every American town — especially not in a time period when faith in God is increasingly taboo. However, the fact that such gatherings exist at all is a privilege.

Nothing in our state or federal laws and regulations requires our governmental leaders to value prayer, uphold Christian values or follow religion of any kind. Many of us prefer a mayor or senator who believes Jesus Christ is this world’s savior, but it’s certainly not a prerequisite to public service.

Thus, we should enjoy these events each and every year that they’re still around. Cherish the opportunity to freely meet with fellow believers/involved citizens – an opportunity many Christians in other countries can only dream of.

Instead of dwelling on rights that may or may not be taken from you, for at least one peaceful morning, focus on a personal right we all should take advantage of throughout our days, wherever we are. “Pray continually,” according to 1 Thessalonians 5:17. In other words, strive for a prayerful attitude every waking moment.

Further, praying alongside our spiritual brothers and sisters has been a key part of a Christ-centered life for a while now. In Acts 3:3, Paul tells us that, after the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost, the burgeoning group of believers "devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer."

Pancakes aren't exactly the same as bread, but they'll do.

Faced with budgetary crises and lots of pressure, our elected officials need our prayer – whether we voted for them or not.  Praise God for the freedom to gather and show our support in an intimate setting.

And please pass the syrup.
