News flash..... San Diego State football has been a disaster for a number of years now.
According to those with Qualcomm Stadium's advisory board, the time to get a new lease between SDSU and stadium officials was long ago. With the start of the season not that far off, there is still no lease in place for the Aztecs to play at the "Q" this season.
Noting that the team did not have a lease in place to play home games at the city-owned stadium last season, who needs a lease?
Estimated numbers from city officials show the prior deal between the city and SDSU resulting in more than $300,000 in combined losses for San Diego on Aztec games in 2006 and 2007. The main reason for this number being in the red is the Aztecs struggle to even get 20,000 fans at a home game.
While a deal was reportedly reached between the city and SDSU earlier this year, whatever is holding up the reported agreement is enough to keep both sides from signing the papers and going public with it.
Even though the city has not come out and said the Aztecs, who have not accomplished a winning season or visited a bowl game in a decade, would be prohibited from playing in the "Q" this season, the current situation cannot last much longer.
As the San Diego Chargers shop for a new stadium, the Aztecs may either find themselves tagging along with the Bolts if they stay in San Diego or being left out in the cold.
Some things that would help the Aztecs in placing a few more butts in the stands for home gridiron contests would include:
* Putting a winning football team on the field;
* Having some credible promotions for the fans (Even when the Padres are doing poorly, the Saturday night giveaways and Friday night fireworks bring people to the stadium);
* Making the home schedule more enticing. When BYU or Utah is your big home game of the season.....good luck. Even if SDSU has to go play two or three away games against the same opponent in order to get one home game some year with a Penn State, Ohio State, USC, Texas, etc. it would be worth it;
As the city continues to bleed in the red financially, this is yet one more wound that needs more than a band-aid approach.
By the way, this season's home opener is Sept. 12 versus Southern Utah. Can you say zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz?
