For Roger Jerone McDowell, the remainder of his life will be spent behind prison walls..jpg)
McDowell was sentenced today in a San Diego court room after being convicted of fatally shooting his pregnant ex-girlfriend at her place of employment in Mission Valley back in June of 2007.
McDowell, 35, had shown up with a bouquet of flowers at the doctor's office where 31-year-old Dawnna Denize Wright worked.
After reportedly refusing the flowers, Wright was shot seven times, killing her and the female fetus. Wright, who had two other daughters from different relationships, had one child with McDowell and was 12 weeks into her second pregnancy.
By offering a guilty plea to first-degree murder charges on Jan. 30, McDowell escaped the death penalty, Under the plea deal, special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and lying in wait were tossed out by the prosecution.
According to information recovered from McDowell's residence, there were also notes regarding plans to kill members of Wright's family.
While it is somewhat comforting to know McDowell will serve out his life in prison, it is too bad the death penalty option was taken off the table by the prosecution.
McDowell's actions do not warrant his being allowed to spend even a confined life behind bars. This was one case where the death penalty was certainly warranted.
