A pair of San Diego State fraternities were recently hit with penalties following their involvement last Spring in a major drug bust on campus.
School officials noted that the Theta Chi fraternity has been expelled for at least three and a half years for its role in the drug-ring scandal, while Phi Kappa Psi was suspended for 18 months.
Members from both fraternities were among more than 100 people taken into custody earlier this year as part of Operation Sudden Fall.
During the drug bust investigation, agents allegedly discovered evidence of widespread drug-dealing among some fraternity members. Drugs reportedly involved included marijuana, cocaine and Ecstasy.
To say that this doesn't happen at other campuses would be wrong. To say that this happens at other campuses on a regular basis would be wrong too.
What is more frightening in this investigation is that more than 100 people were involved in the drug bust. This was not just a case of a handful of students doing drugs on campus or selling them.
Turning a blind eye to this would have been wrong. We applaud SDSU for their actions and hope that if something like this happens again, the response is even heavier.
Kids are supposed to have fun while learning, but drugs are not supposed to be part of the equation.
