You probably have been there or have heard about it -- the succulent stone crab, the 'hashbrowns,' the champagne, the mustard sauce, and most notably, the long wait. Coming here has become such a tradition that the lines are often hours long, unless you have it in with the management -- then it may only be an hour. They don't take reservations. If you have a party of more than 20, then give them a ring. But the wait is worth it. Dress to impress. It is a great way to meet people as you commiserate over the length of time it takes to be seated and as you pat your stomachs satisfactorily on the way out.

As a viable alternative, take stone crabs to go. Order ahead and drive down to Miami to pick them up. You may still have to wait, but not as long. Then take the crabs home and eat in peace. Don't forget utensils...and butter as well as their tangy Key Lime Pie for dessert. They do ship to you, but at this busy time, that may not be available. Call and find out!

In its 96th season, this landmark has been here since 1913, when the concept began as a lunch counter frequented by those who favored fish. But it wasn't until the '20s that stone crabs entered the equation. Before that, the locals weren't even sure they were edible!

Joe's Stone Crab is located at 11 Washington Ave., Miami Beach. For more information, call 1-800-780-CRAB.
