Today, September 17th, is the day established by Congress to celebrate our United States Constitution. It was on this date in 1787 that all 12 state delegations approved our Constitution.

Our Constitution is a remarkable document which contains only 4,400 words. It is the oldest and shortest written constitution of any major government in the world. It has been amended only 27 times and has served our country well through wars, assassinations of presidents and political upheavals. It guarantees us freedoms enjoyed by no other people on earth.

Certainly, one of the most remarkable parts of our Constitution is the preamble which reads:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

And many of us hear the song from Schoolhouse Rock when we read these words. Check out your knowledge of our constitution here.
