I put a call out to those who are brave enough to travel with their children. I asked people to share some of their family travel mishaps with me so that I could share them with you. The response was overwhelming and I am still reading through all of the heartfelt responses and advice.
I will continue to post one or two of your stories each week. Some of these stories are funny, some are a little sad and some will encourage all parents to be prepared for ANYTHING when traveling with youngsters.
Chris Christensen of Amateur Traveler makes me want to call out before I walk into any hotel room with his story:
When our kids were younger we were visiting a friend who had booked us a hotel room. We drove past a number of hotels (including one 2 blocks from his house) to a nicer hotel 20 minutes away. We had stayed at his house late so our kids were very tired by the time we got to the hotel.
When we went to check in they said they had no rooms despite the fact that we had a reservation. They put us up for free in the hotel 2 blocks from our friends house. We had to drive the 20 minutes back to that hotel and now the kids are exhausted. We got a key to our room and went to finally go to sleep. Well... it turned out this hotel had
1) electronic room keys that the programmed
2) both exterior and interior doors
So when we opened the hotel room there was a couple sleeping in the room. By this point our son was sobbing that we would "never... find... a.. place.. to... sleep". Before we even got back to the front desk someone met us. A minute after we had left they realized that they had given us the wrong room.
