Experience, Inc., a provider of career services for college students and young alumni, announced on Sept. 4 the results of its 2008 Life After College Survey, in which 70 percent of recent graduates reported they left their first job within two years of joining.

This survey highlights the need to make career path decisions prior to graduation by interning, job shadowing, networking, finding mentors and getting involved in professional associations on campus. Each of these opportunities offers students the chance to find a career they are passionate about and enjoy doing.

“That’s our goal at Experience, to help these young professionals pursue a career path they love. There's such a difference between a person who feels stuck in their job and someone who is excited and fired up. That energy spreads to everyone around them - their colleagues, family and friends and their community,” said Jenny Floren, founder and CEO of Experience, Inc.

Other important survey findings include:

  • 43 percent of Generation Y are not in the career they expected to be in after college, either because they couldn’t find a job, or another opportunity presented itself
  • 60 percent are currently looking for another job or career
  • 74 percent of recent graduates are in a career that aligns with their college major
