Honestly, until this past weekend, I thought that the only thing a band needed to get a crowd going insane was incredibly moving music. After attending the Artery Foundation’s tour this past Saturday in Springfield, VA, it became apparent that music is not the only thing that people look for in their favorite musicians. While music plays a major role in the overall effectiveness of any show, it is not the only thing. What are the two major things that are important when you’re performing in front of a crowd?
The Music, what else?
This one couldn’t be any more obvious. Live shows exist for the sake of the fans (and for musicians to gain more experience touring, performing live and out of their comfort zones). Whatever kind of music it is, it’s going to cause some humming, singing, tapping feet, rocking heads, and even some hardcore dancing and moshing (unless you’re seeing Jack Johnson or the John Mayer Trio). Music brings people together from all over the globe.
Stage Presence, anyone?
Now, you may be asking yourself what I mean by stage presence. If a musician (or any performer, really) simply stands on the stage, doesn’t show any emotion, or motion to the crowd for them to sing along, the crowd is going to grow weary. While some fans may overlook this because they are SO into the entire performance—even if it’s lacking some fire—it can become a nuisance for some. Fans like to get involved and fired up when they are in the midst of seeing their favorite musicians on stage. Show emotion on your face, move around on the stage, clap your hands (the crowd will ALWAYS join in on this), and talk to your fans! Everyone will benefit from this and have a memorable time. Having a fun stage presence brings everyone together.
