
I have often spoken on and written about the rate at which technology has advanced during the course of human history. It is a favorite subject of mine. It is particularly interesting to consider the "Faster--Smaller" concept. That is, the idea that the periods of time between major achievements in most technological lines have steadily become shorter.
This is, presumably, due to the idea that, as time moves forward, more people are working on the same problem than in previous years. Not to mention the fact that communication technology, itself, has made worldwide communications essentially instant and almost effortless.
Yet, I find it most noteworthy the sheer number of times in history when scientists, scholars and public figures felt that they were at the pinnacle of human ingenuity and development. What about now? Do we finally have it all figured out?
