Christian writers, grab your quills! November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). What does that mean?
Well, according to the official National Novel Writing Month website, it is a "fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30."
The first NaNoWriMo was held in 1999 and has steadily gained cultural steam among professional writers and amateur writers alike. Just last year, over 119,000 people participated, with 21,000 of those people reaching the 50,000 word threshold.
All one must do is register at the website and start writing. Writers can provide updates to their progress, collect friends for mutual support and donate to the NaNoWriMo Young Writer's Program. Winners receive a web badge, a certificate of completion and the satisfaction of achieving such an insane goal. Completing NaNoWriMo also garners a fair amount of street-cred for the writer.
All in all, this project is well worth the time. Don't worry too much about grammar, inconsistencies and such. There is no time for that. Just start writing. It won't be perfect, but you won't be alone in that category.
For you Christian writers out there, this is a great opportunity for you to stop toying around with the idea of writing a great work of Christian-fiction and to actually belt it out before you can convince yourself it is a bad idea. Don't worry, you can blame me if your friends think you are crazy.
Why not try it?
