Terra cotta pot jockey for KY Derby
Photos: Elizabeth Magee

Making themed crafts is a wonderful way to celebrate the Kentucky Derby Festival. This clay pot jockey made by my Aunt Dolly (specifically the plastic egg hat) was what inspired me to make plastic egg jockeys. My Aunt Dolly has created clay pot statues for everything from Christmas to my high school graduation. As a Derby fanatic, it came as no surprise when she gave a clay pot jockey to our family. It is an easy craft that anyone can make.

Clay pots can be found in all sizes at many craft stores. The smallest pots, about 2 inches tall, are the cutest, and of course the cheapest.

To form the body of the jockey, stack and glue the terra cotta pots. Paint them however you like and add the necessary details like arms, a hat, and goggles.

You can find a guide for creating clay pot soliders here. Alter the ideas from the guide to create your jockeys.

Printed scrapbook paper makes for fun Derby invitations & cards.

Greeting cards are another great jockey craft. You can use this simple design for Derby party invitations, thank you cards, or a friendly hello. All you need is plain card stock and patterned scrapbook paper.

Draw and cut out a template for the hat and jockey silk from sturdy paper. Creating a template allows you to trace the same shape each time. (If you need it, I have drawn up a template page that you can use, just follow the link and print it out at 100%.)

Using your template, trace the shapes onto coordinating scrapbook paper. Any design is fine, but bright colors look the best.

Fold a piece of solid color card stock into a card shape.

Paste the hat and jockey silk onto the card.

Now you have a unique greeting card for Derby time.

Add a fleur-de-lis to the back and people will think you’re really crafty!

The brighter the paper design, the more fun the jockey silks look on the cards.

Bold papers like these look best as jockey silks. I used scrapbook paper which can be found at any craft store and major chains Target and Walmart.

These cards were invitations to my Derby party last year. They were simply the jockey silks, but I realized that adding a hat would make them look even better.

I used my computer to type and print out the inside of my invitations.

I have created this template of the shapes to make a Derby card.

As I mentioned above, this template is to be printed out, cut, and traced to make jockey silks, hats, and fleur-de-lis for cards.
