ATY's summer conservatory begins June 22.

If you're still looking for a creative outlet this summer for your little leading man or pint-sized prima donna, consider Alaska Theatre of Youth's Summer Conservatory.  Held at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts, ATY's conservatory programs give young actors the chance to hone their skills and tread the boards of the ACPA's Discovery and Elvera Voth theatres.

This summer's Advanced Conservatory, for actors ages 13 and up with at least one show under their belts, begins Monday, June 22.  Choose from Shakespeare Conservatory ("The Taming of the Shrew"), Broadway Musical Conservatory ("Guys and Dolls, Jr."), or Performance Art Conservatory (in which participants will perform dance, movement, and spoken word to a David Bowie soundtrack).  Advanced Conservatory productions will be staged July 16-18.  Auditions are required for participants who have not previously attended an Advanced Conservatory.

Regular Conservatory, which begins June 29, is open to young actors ages 8 and up with good reading ability.  This year's Regular Conservatory Festival of Plays, which runs July 23-25, will include "The Three Musketeers," "The Iliad, the Odyssey and the Greeks," and a musical showcase.  For younger performers (ages 5 to 8), twice-a-week Fairytale Theatre runs June 30 through July 26, culminating in a performance of "Babar the Elephant."

For young theatre junkies who are more interested in what goes on behind the scenes, ATY offers Technical Conservatory, which runs June 22-July 26.  Technical Conservatory is open to participants age 13 and up with any level of tech experience (including none); participants will receive training in carpentry, painting, props, assistant stage management, light and sound board operation, and shop safety.

Registration is open now for ATY's Summer Conservatory, and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.  Tuition for all conservatory programs is $700 per child (except for Fairytale Theatre, which is $195).  Before and after care is available for an additional charge.  Registration and orientation will be held this Saturday, June 20, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts.  For registration forms and more information, visit www.alaskatheatreofyouth.org or call ATY at (907) 338-4901.
