I know Lerner and Loewe called it "the lusty month of May," but here in Anchorage it's more like the lovely month of May. With all that sun beating down outside, you may be reluctant to make theater plans — after all, who wants to spend two and a half hours shuttered into a dark room when it's so gloriously sunny outside? On the other hand, there are a couple of hot tickets out there it'd be a shame to miss.
I'm hearing wonderful things about Timothy Daly's "The Man in the Attic" at Out North. Directed by Dick Reichman and featuring Jeff McCamish, Veronica Page, Steve Hunt and Bernie Blaine, "The Man in the Attic" is based on the true story of a Jewish man who was hidden during World War II by a German couple who didn't tell him when the war ended. The Anchorage Daily News says Out North's production "offers thoughtful and engaging theater through a solid cast, smart staging, able direction by Dick Reichman and a powerful script." "The Man in the Attic" closes Sunday, so don't drag your feet on this one.
On the other hand, if you're going to trade your precious time with the sun for some time with the stage, maybe you want something tried-and-true. In that case, head downtown to check out Cyrano's production of Thornton Wilder's classic "Our Town." I was there for opening night on Friday (you can read my review here) and can promise you won't be disappointed; the cast is strong and Elizabeth Ware's directing is true to "Our Town" tradition while offering some fresh, creative touches.
When you're exhausted from hitting the trails (or, more realistically, raking up all that winter detritus from your front yard), make some time this weekend to nurse that fresh sunburn and catch one of these can't-miss shows. Don't worry — the sun will still be there when the curtain calls are through.
